It has been one heck of a year - thanks to COVID-19.When the pandemic finally got to Kenya in March 2020, we had to stop and drop everything. This has never happened to me in my lifetime. Covid-19 interrupted my hectic schedule that had turned me into a robot. The pandemic made me realize things I had taken for granted – freedom of movement being one of them. Adjusting to the new normal was not as easy as I thought.I was not alone. My friend Sonia Birdi was struggling as well. Her hot yoga studio at Two Rivers closed. Due to the strict Covid-19 health guidelines, gatherings in closed spaces had been forbidden.Mid this year, I paid Sonia a visit at her home. It was a nice sunny day and we sat outside under a tree enjoying the cool breeze. We talked and reflected about life and how the virus had interrupted our lives. I had taken to recycling bottles as a way to stay “sane” while Sonia dedicated her time to helping boys at Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC).Since early in the year, she has been running yoga and meditation sessions with teenage boys. Most of them are former street urchins who are under rehabilitation. “In the new norm, we have to learn to be extra thoughtful and careful. I have learnt it’s about time we changed the way we give in society. Teach them how to fish,” she told me.Fast forward to December 2020... I saw a video on Facebook shared by a friend. It was a beer yoga session. Immediately it gave me an idea. “Sonia, can we pull this off?” I asked on WhatsApp. “Why not?” Sonia responded. “I will call you,” I said. Several phone calls later, we had a date, poster and a beautiful venue by the poolside.<img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fdc21337f5de9e187ce9787_1.jpg" height="auto" width="auto"> Many of my friends thought I was joking. Being Christmas season, we agreed we were going to do a beer yoga charity event to benefit the awesome boys of MPC. Entry fee was donations in cash and kind towards the MPC.<img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fdc2166b1a9873264cd3628_2.jpg" height="auto" width="auto"> The sun was out it all its glory. We stretched and sipped our drinks by the poolside. We are truly grateful to the Board of Sikh Union Club for agreeing to support this worthy cause.<img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fdc219f3325e94b59b141f7_4.jpg" height="auto" width="auto"> And what a day it was. We had about 15 people attending the two and a half hour session. Some had never tried yoga before but there was space for the regulars and first-timers. Christmas Giving: Tipsy Yoga for Charity 

The Leleshwa wine tour is not your typical wine tour. It is more like a wine farm walkabout, but one that fills you with great pride just knowing that in under 30 years, it will make it to Kenya's already decorated tourism destinations’ list.&nbsp; If you are familiar with the wine business, then you will appreciate that the wine business is not for the faint-hearted. This is an investment that requires more than just the huge capital that goes into starting it up. It also takes an insurmountable amount of patience - a rare virtue in entrepreneurs in Kenya. And even with this, its take-off and survival is still not guaranteed.&nbsp; I say this because I do not want you to compare the Leleshwa wine farm walkabout with your Stellenbosch, Franschoek or Groot Constancia experience. That wouldn’t be fair. Some of these vineyards have been around for centuries. In fact, Groot Constatncia has been around for a record 332 years.&nbsp; With that understanding, we set out on a walkabout to the famed homegrown Leleshwa Vineyard, situated at the Morendat farm in Naivasha, it is about a 2-hours drive from Nairobi by road and approximately 95 kilometres from the city. The tours are held annually between October and December. The tour fully depends on the frequency of bookings. From our booking experience, it is evident that the interest is growing and soon we may have to book months in advance.&nbsp; The tour starts at 10:00am. This means that you have to factor in your travel time especially if you are joining in from out of town. It is prudent to layer your clad as the sun peels off fairly fast. Pick sneakers over boots. You might need your sun hat and sunglasses; the scarf has no rules. Pack light, it is not that kind of a trek. The team provides drinking water and that’s a litre or so, off your luggage.&nbsp; In terms of what to expect, you will start with the beef farm. Lots of pedigree beef…sorry, cows. It is just difficult not to view the live animals as plated. My friend Esther only had visions of the handbags the hides these would produce. She has an eye.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1875px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fdbaecdaf50450fe3cf20e4_tou.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div></figure> Next we went to the actual vineyard. About 4,000 acres of in total.&nbsp; Our most treasured lesson for the day was that there is a stark difference between table grapes and wine grapes. What this means is that you cannot make wine from your everyday grocery grapes. This got me wondering if I can make cider from my table apples.&nbsp;We also learnt that for the first time, Leleshwa will bring to market the Chenin Blanc which has been in the making for 4 years. From what we sampled, the Chenin Blanc has so much potential to win some international awards.&nbsp; <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1875px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fdbaf68fcc9fc9ca276fb77_Blanc.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div></figure> Leleshwa is also testing for Malbec. The vines have a few more months to harvest. So be on the lookout for a bottle of Leleshwa Malbec (2021) at your W&amp;S. And with all the experience, knowledge, resources and ready market, I am not putting the likelihood of a Leleshwa Gin and Leleshwa Vodka too far out.&nbsp; If you are looking for a slightly different experience than the wine farm walkabout, they should be harvesting in Q1 of 2021. Hopefully they can open up the harvesting experience to the public. We are told the harvesting starts at 3:00am in the morning. So you can plan around this. Leleshwa wine tour... not your ordinary wine tour

It has been a long and unpredictable year, and most of us have been stressed out. My girls and I decided to take a breather, and do a road trip to Nanyuki- Mwisho wa reli as it is commonly referred to. We hit the road on Friday morning at 9am. The early the better, right? With a full tank of fuel, which lasted us the entire trip and more, we were ready to go.Our first stop for brunch was at slightly past Kenol at County 2 county grill. They have very nice Mbuzi choma which goes for Ksh.700 a kilo, and mouthwatering chicken from Ksh.1,000. This took us less that fifteen minutes as we ordered take away, and got back on the road. We were eager to get to our destination. Our next stop was the outskirts of Nanyuki, where we had booked our accommodation, at AJs The Ranch. Accommodation here is quite affordable if you are on a tight budget. The rooms go for betweenKsh.2,000 and Ksh.3,000 a night. The place has clean and spacious rooms, acommon lounge, and from some rooms you can see Mt. Kenya early in the morning. There is a lovely coffee joint at Kisima for the coffee lovers, and a gift shop. We parked by the roadside, and danced to some music. We had carried our drinks with us because what’s a road trip with no drinks and music combo? The place is scenic and we took lots of photos. This is where the Thika-Nanyuki railway comes to an end. Legend has it that the map was lost, and hence the rail could not go all the way to Meru. We met a welcoming guard who explained that there were plans to reopen this December. There were few patrons here, but more came in as the evening went by. The place is quiet,and very beautiful. They have a varied menu, from food to drinks. We spent sometime here, taking coffee, and cocktails before heading out. Cocktails here go for Ksh.500 upwards. Our last stop on Saturday was Comfort gardens at Ol Pejeta conservancy. We got here, to find the place packed. There was a birthday partygoing down, and we did not stay long. The prices here are a bit high compared to other places we had been to a bottle of regular wine goes for Ksh.2500. Some of our friends had rented an Air B&amp;B near the Trout tree, and we passed by for sightseeing. The accommodation here is also pocket friendly especially if you are a big group of people. The price for the Air B&amp;B, is an estimated Ksh.30,000, especially during this festive season. The prices may vary at other times. They even had a whole mbuzi to roast. All in all, we had fun before heading back home. There are many places where accommodation is affordable, and also many places to visit while in Nanyuki. Am sure I’ll be back soon. It felt nice to be away from the City’s hustle for a moment. If you’re looking for a quick getaway this season, then you should consider Nanyuki.&nbsp;

Tight budget for a road trip? Don’t sweat it, we are on a budget too 

Have you wanted to take a trip and shied off because of what you have read in guide books? Well, you are not alone. This happens to the best of us as Nanjala Nyabola shares. The Kenyan writer spoke to The Guardian after her adventurous trip to Burkina Faso. Prior to her trip, Nanjala read countless guide books to arm herself with necessary tips. As you would have it, many of the books she read spelt caution during trips across Africa. Warnings of insecurities, mugging and even kidnapping kept the Kenya born writer unsure of taking her solo trip. However, she was determined to experience the western African culture, having studied there a while back. Unsure of what the future held, Nanjala set out to Burkina Faso after a short stint in Togo working for a non-profit course. Travelling alone is daring enough, if guidebooks are anything to go by, doing it on a tight budget is unheard of. However, as she moved from the historical Ouagadougou and Gorom-Gorom, she discovered how easy it was for her to blend in. All her fears of being mugged, conned or even kidnapped gradually disappeared as no one paid her attention. &nbsp; Clearly written for a different tourist, all the guidebooks Nanjala read in preparation for her travel misled her to fear her fellow race. Had she given in to this fear, she would have missed the full experience of the friendly people of Sahel and the astonishing caravans filing to the weekly market among other spectacles. Happy to have overcome her fears, Nanjala says, “Fear is a powerful and paralyzing impulse. In healthy doses, it can protect us from being a danger to ourselves and to others. In unhealthy doses, it can be the difference between living a rich, fulfilling life or ending your life as an anecdote in one of those ‘regrets of the dying’ articles”.About planning, you probably have heard seasoned travelers insist on adequate preparation. But as Nanjala discovered, sometimes you only need the passion to see places. Working with a short time and with no assurance she would ever visit the Western Africa country again, she picked a place on her map and got moving. As she further discloses, she didn’t make prior bookings for accommodation or transport. She kept hopping on the next bus and booking into any favorable space she found. In her book, Travelling While Black: Essays Inspired by a Life on the Move, you will find more details of Nanjala’s adventure. The most important lessons from her narrative is to travel whenever you can. Do not let fears meant for a different audience cripple your dream of seeing the beauty of our continent. A decade from now, FunKidz hopes to be a 100%sustainable business, moving the needle from their current use of 50% upcycled material for their nifty multi-use products for both the mother brand and the offshoot, FunHomez, which is just three months old. Founded by Wanjiru Waweru Waithaka 11 years ago FunKidz has been innovating, designing and manufacturing children’s furniture using upcycled material. We started with tea trays then evolved from there. We also have the standing bicycle desk that can be used both for work and entertainment. Fun Homes: Authentic brand inspired by Africa, made in Kenya

The Jacaranda Propaganda. You’ve probably heard about it or come across the Hashtag Jacaranda Propaganda (#JacaradaPropaganda) on Social Media. Better yet, you may have spotted the purple Jacaranda flowers shining in the sun and littering the ground in your neighborhood. Yes, the#JacarandaPropaganda is about nature showing off through blooming Jacarandas. In Kenya, they bloom in September through to late September.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1342px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fa74f64eabba48a3f2c044e_2.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div></figure>Jacarandas are an exotic blessing that was left behind by the British at the end of their colonial rule of the country and by extension, Africa. As such, they are mostly found in areas previously occupied by whites-you will not spot a Jacaranda tree in the wild. You’ll spot Jacaranda’s in Kenya's urban areas of Nairobi, Nakuru, Nanyuki, Nyeri, Kiambu, Limuru, Tigoni, Murang'a, Timau, Eldoret, Kakamega, Naivasha, Kisumu and everywhere else the British settled or administered in the early-mid 1900s.Jacarandas are attributed to Allan Cunningham, a British explorer and botanist who introduced this ornamental tree into the British psyche. The breed was then exported to Rhodesia, and then spread across the rest of the British colony in Africa. Across the continent, in the former colonies of Britain, #JacarandaPropaganda is something people look forward to.&nbsp;In South Africa for example, in Pretoria, there are an estimated70,000 jacaranda trees that bloom in spring every year. This has earned the city Jacaranda City moniker. Here, you will even spot the rare white Jacarandas. On Herbert Baker Street in Groenkloof, there are about one hundred rare white Jacarandas. Annually, in October, hundreds of Japanese retirees fly in to see this profusion of purple.<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1500px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fa74ce525a4ef04e835ab5d_1.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div></figure>Back home, Jacaranda trees are attributed to one Frank Walter Jameson aka Jim Jameson, aka Jacaranda Jim. Jacaranda Jim was Kenya’s Town Planning Consultant in 1926 with a mandate to supervise town planning. Being a Jacaranda tree lover and given his position, Jim planted as many Jacaranda trees as he possibly could.&nbsp;In 2016, #JacarandaPropaganda started gaining popularity on social media in Kenya. When Jacaranda trees in Nairobi started to bloom to a seismic hue of purple in, KOT started taking shots of them and posting on Twitter complete with the Hashtag.The trend has continued gaining popularity among Kenyans. The photos shared are just breathtaking and have even sparked conversations around preserving the environment for future generations. Sadly, most of the Jacaranda trees in the country have been cut down and we may not experience the blooming glory as Jim Jacaranda intended. But seeing that the hashtag is picking fast, there is hope that we can preserve the remaining pieces and even plant more. Every year different Kenyan cities get to experience the beauty that comes with the blooming of Jacaranda trees and from as early as September, Kenyans are able to enjoy the purple haze that dot their cities.I too decided to join the party this year.Though to be honest my ticket to the party was in the form of an assignment.&nbsp;This past weekend I was on a mission to spot jacaranda trees around Kisumu city and take pictures of them for our #jacarandapropaganda project. In Kenya, the trend was started around 4 years ago by <a href="https://twitter.com/Nanjala1">@Nanjala1</a> (Nanjala Nyabola) on twitter.&nbsp;Initially it first felt like just another field work under the hot sun but the more I continued spotting the trees boasting of their pretty purple flowers the more intrigued I became and ditched the whole ‘this is just another field work’ mentality.<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1920px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fac2ce2fc5055617ee87033_jacaranda-268926_1920.jpg" loading="lazy"></div><figcaption>Photo Courtesy </figcaption></figure>Before I left home, I had a few ideas on where to spot them, Milimani estate being one of them of course. Though to be certain I had to confirm with Google though the information was scanty.&nbsp; Luckily I managed to find a tour guide, a friend of mine who is well versed with the area more than I am. In my defense I haven’t been around that area since 2017, I digress.&nbsp;We selected Milimani estate as our main focus area because that’s the one location we were sure we would see the blooming jacaranda trees.&nbsp;After a few trips around the estate, we were able to spot a few trees along Nehru road, Busia road and Got Huma road. With some growing in clusters and others alone yet proudly wearing their purple crowns.<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:960px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fac2d33ac5336f483b5d41d_JT.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div><figcaption>Photo Courtesy </figcaption></figure>We later went to Jamhuri Victoria park located Off Achieng Oneko - Ridoch Road, which I think should be renamed to purple haze park or something in that line given how the Jacaranda trees hug the park with their bell-shaped leaves swaying above majestically to the rhythm of the wind.&nbsp;The trees have also dominated inside the park setting a great picnic scene decorated by its purple carpet from the fallen leaves.&nbsp; An added advantage is that the park is quite peaceful especially with everyone relaxing as vendors sell their goods.&nbsp;Shifting over to the Great Rift Valley, Nakuru, jacaranda trees are perfectly lined along old Nairobi road and Solai road forming purple umbrellas decorating the roads. While driving through the town, one can also spot the trees in people’s compounds, churches, schools like shiners girls high school as well as next to restaurants, petrol stations along the Nakuru-Nairobi road.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1920px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5fac2d6e095c050733a02e61_jacaranda-537027_1920.jpg" loading="lazy"></div><figcaption>Photo Courtesy </figcaption></figure>Over to the capital city, Nairobi, her residents have been able to enjoy the purple rain as early as September. In areas such as Karen, Kilimani, Tom Mbeya street, Upperhill, Kenyatta avenue, Railway museum, Jevanjee Gardens, Koinange street- just to mention a few, Nairobians are being treated to breathtaking sceneries. On social media, they are not shy when it comes to sharing photos of these trees, in their full glory and bloom.&nbsp;On the Nothern region of Kenya, Marsabit to be specific, the jacaranda trees in that area also gracefully take part in #jacarandapropaganda. The trees form a line venturing deep into Marsabit forest.&nbsp;And on the Eastern region, residents of Wamunyu town in Machakos County also get to bask in the glory of Jacaranda trees every October.&nbsp;

#JacarandaPropaganda:  Fifty shades of purple across Kenya 

After a week-long of meetings and beating office deadlines, the outdoors are always refreshing. And we are suckers for great outdoor experiences; always out there trying out new activities and discovering new places to hangout. Our latest discovery is the Xina Horse Riding and Stables in Kiambu along Ridgeways Road. The place is calm and ideal to anyone who wants out from the hustle and bustle of the city.When we got there, we were treated to a warm reception and our meal orders taken. They are allocated depending on the size and age of the rider. <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1500px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f96ae3228fe3c0d749f6240_1.jpg" loading="lazy" width="auto" height="auto"></div></figure>Our order was ready in no time and as we sat to eat, Wairimu Githuka, Director Xina Horse Riding, patiently took us through the activities they offer and what they are about. “Xina is a result of our love for the outdoors and our belief that kids should grow around animals-any kind of animals. Animals teach children responsibilities. We are also about breaking the stereotype that horse-riding belongs to a certain social class,” she says. “We chose horse riding because the activity is therapeutic. It is hard work but a very relaxing activity. It also helps with physical fitness,” she continues. Parents are also going out of their way to give their kids the experiences they never had growing up. While the activities here are mostly kid-centered, there’s a lot for adults to learn as well. He taught us the basic dos and don’ts of horse riding. He then took us through all the parts on a horse involved during riding before we actually got to the riding. The experience was harder than we expected but it was very exciting. This is one activity that requires a lot of flexibility and the aftermath was waking up the following morning with sore thighs and butts. In Macharia’s words, kids tend to learn horse riding faster as compared to adults due to their flexibility. Apart from the warm reception, good food and an exciting experience, the washrooms- which pose a headache to most parents in mass gatherings, in this facility are very clean. Other desirable features are that it easily opens up and folds backdown and it comes with a ladder to help you access the car roof.“The biggest impediments of this tent is that its associated with a higher price tag and heavy bulk. Lately, he prefers to be the one behind the camera rather than in front of it and his images prove that a picture can in fact be worth a thousand words. The Village Garden, just what WHO recommended

We’ve all been there. You’re young, naïve, full of hopes and dreams. &nbsp;You know, the ones you have before you run headfirst into the concrete wall that is life &amp; the numerous responsibilities you didn’t sign up for as an adult member of the human race. &nbsp;In my case, one of them included having a vehicle that could use all of 400 horsepower, or more. Doing the 0-100 km/h sprint in about 4 seconds would be nice too. But mostly it was about that number. It had to match what the WRC cars could deliver, or better it. 300 brake horsepower sounded like a lot back then. Today, it really isn’t. &nbsp;In 2015, I thought that dream was going to end up with me cramming a 7-liter V8 into the engine bay of a then 9-year old Japanese wagon. This didn’t happen. What did happen is that in 2017, I sold the sensible station wagon bought a lemon of a car. &nbsp;Like all interesting project cars, at first glance, they don’t look like much. There’s usually a lot to fix.<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1280px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f739276a96d3e167ad35d5a_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>&nbsp;For most Kenyans, anything with 4-wheels and an engine is an appliance. Does it start? Will it burn a hole in my pocket? Can my usual mechanic fix whatever problems crop up without ripping me off? Oh, and I have to look good in it. &nbsp;That’s the typical checklist here, and it explains why we end up with so many underpowered, shoddily maintained BMWs and Mercedes on our roads. Because image, or our perception of it, comes first. Who needs maintenance when you’re driving an underpowered tub of German lard? &nbsp;A project car requires a different mentality. It’s a borderline obsession with creating something fantastic out of something sub-par. It’s you saying no, when everyone else says, yes. &nbsp;Which inevitably means starting with something that has a million problems to fix. The 6-speed dual-clutch transmissions in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Xs hada curious flaw – especially for a German firm. The mechanism that would shift it into 4th gear had about as much integrity as a Kenyan politician .It wasn’t long before they failed. <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1280px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f7392c5d77a04cfa0c94084_3.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>&nbsp;But that wasn’t a deal breaker. The engine and gearbox were going to be fully rebuilt anyway, so all the old stuff had to come out. This, I thought, would be a short project. 2 months of disassembly, rebuilding, and I can finally get behind the wheel of something potent before I turn 30. Life, had other ideas. In the same way that an army marches on its stomach, project success is heavily reliant on logistics. When you’re trying to source 300 plus kilograms of parts from continents away, all kinds of things can – and do - go wrong. I ended up with an extra pair of camshafts, for instance, because the initial set ordered was ‘misplaced’, and then ‘found’, months later. &nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1280px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f7392d63d7b52c73915ecd2_4.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>After being so agonizingly close to<a href="https://www.instagram.com/zafar.sadik/"> finishing the engine re-assembly</a>, the cam cap snapped. This is a relatively small, but vital block of <a href="https://www.amsperformance.com/cart/ams-mitsubishi-4b11-cam-cap/">forged aluminum</a> that cradles one end of your camshafts and keeps them in place when you’re revving out to 8000 rpm. Between ordering a replacement, and getting it into the block, at least 4 months had passed. What I thought was going to be a<a href="https://www.instagram.com/zafar.sadik/"> 2-month project</a> stretched into a 13-month slog, fighting one issue after another. The flip side, however, is that this <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CD0JLUsgNQk/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">little 4-door</a> sedan taught me things about people, myself, and talent, which I didn’t know. I found local talent in precision machining &amp; <a href="https://www.instagram.com/weld_hack/">fabrication</a> which I didn’t know about. Friendships were built around this vehicle and all her tantrums. Friends who said yes to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/zafar.sadik/">working on this crazy project</a>, and proceeded to build it come rain, or shine. In the process, a side-hustle was born. &nbsp;The biggest lessons, however, were in being patient, and facing ideas that seem too large, or too complicated to pull off. If you told my then 10-year-old self, watching Collin McRae fly through rally stages in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8pJvcURQuI">Mica Blue Subaru Impreza</a>, that I would own, much less daily-drive something with more power than that vehicle had 20-yearslater, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. &nbsp;I certainly wasn’t the target audience Mitsubishi had in mind when <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ1-v4W3Dsc">Tommi Makinen</a> &amp; Collin McRae were fighting epic battles for the World Rally Championship. But here I am, decades later, buying one of the last of a dying breed of stupidly rapid, capable, all-wheel-drive rally replicas. &nbsp;Mjolnir, as she’s known, finally got back on the road 14-months after she rolled into a makeshift workshop. &nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:1280px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f73928e141ca852339c9427_2.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>She has her quirks. At slow speeds over rough roads, she can be a bit of handful, to put it mildly. I adore the stock bucket seats, but – from passenger feedback – they were certainly not built to cater for curvaceous women. Like all of her predecessors, she has a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVt1IjIdLxY">horrifically bad turning</a> circle. If I’ve ever held you up in a parking lot as I do a 10-point turn where everyone else would do a 3-pointer, I apologize. If I eke out 250 km between top ups, I consider that a good run…especially when you have 2-bar of boost under your right foot, and fuel injectors which may as well be a firehose dumping fuel into the cylinders every time I tickle the throttle. Having spent the last 30 days on his bike touring the countryside, TPS catches up with Rakesh and he shares his experience going solo for a cross-country bike ride.</figcaption></figure>Tell us about this particular trip?&nbsp;I've been cycling for the last one month from Nairobi heading to and exploring the western side of Kenya. Currently I’m in Port Victoria but my next destination from here is Kakamega. I have gone through Suswa, Naivasha, Mau Narok, Njoro, Maili Sita (Nakuru), Lake Solai, Subukia, Lake Bogoria, Tenges, Nyaru, Kipkabus, Nandi Hills, Kisumu, NdereIsland, Mbita, Mfangano Island, Usenge, Mageta Island and River Yala.&nbsp;&nbsp;How many kilometers do you plan to cover?I have no set distance in mind for this but daily I ride between 50-100km depending on the specific destination of the day and how I feel. This is more of an easy tour, for once. Previously, I'd ride 150km plus per day on 5-day trips.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:451px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f6c8c9d5254084a2a397fd7_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>What’s the longest distance you’ve covered?In a day, 180km (but not in this particular tour). In a week, 930km.&nbsp;Do you stay in hotels on your bike rides?&nbsp;I do a mix of camping and cheap lodging. I carry a tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat but if I feel too worn out, I stay in a hotel.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:600px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f6c8cdc94e910c6388a3366_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>&nbsp;How do you prepare yourself for an epic bike ride? The biggest component is the mental preparedness. I have to envision myself completing the whole tour before setting out because only then can I feel confident enough to start. I plot outa rough route picking random locations on the map and saying I want to go here and here and here then try to connect them using the roads I see on the map. However, I also prefer to leave a whole lot of the route to chance, let it surprise me. For one, I prefer dirt roads over tarmac roads. The more mysterious or remote the route seems, the more appealing it is to me. &nbsp;And what's in your bag?Currently, on top of my camping equipment, I'm carrying a change of clothes (2 t-shirts, 2 pairs of shorts, a pair of trousers, 2 sets of cycling clothing, a pair of shoes, a warm sweater, several pairs of socks, a pair of sandals, a rain jacket, camp light and basic toiletries.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:610px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f6c8d51f87bc916e5f47292_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>What makes you believe that you'll make it (cross-country)?I suppose it's experience that's given me the confidence. I've been doing solo bike touring since 2014 so I'm confident in my physical and mental capabilities. I also trust my equipment. I have a sturdy mountain bike that's taken me over many treacherous trails comfortably.&nbsp;&nbsp;What landscapes have impressed you? Any places you’d like to revisit?Oh they are too many to count. The most surprising ones though were on the route from Kongoni (Naivasha) to Mau Narok; going around Menengai Crater from Olorongai; riding along Lake Solai or descending into Subukia Valley; and climbing the 24 hairpins from Chebutei to Nyaru. But ultimately, nothing beats the views across Lake Victoria especially at sunset, be it atop Gembe Hill or on any of the islands.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:623px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f6c8dc20a44c1f10aba7eb5_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>What challenges have you faced so far?Besides occasional bad weather(rainstorms) and a case of stomach flu, I've had my phone stolen by a young man I requested to take a photo of me on Gembe Hill. I turned my back on him for a few minutes and he simply took off downhill with my phone. It was actually hilarious. Thankfully, that was my old phone though it had a better camera than my new one.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:677px"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f6c8e047d118d6c379d556b_1.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>&nbsp;Are there a lot of people taking up biking? How are they pushing themselves to cover more kms?Oh the cycling community has grown tremendously in the recent years and even more this year, fueled by theCovid-19 situation I believe. Lots of people are keen to push their bodies to the limits and then some more just to see what they are made of. I know a couple of guys who cycled from Nairobi to Mombasa (approximately 500km) in under 24hrs. Actually 15hrs to be precise. That aside, cycling for 100km+distances has become a weekend norm for most people now.&nbsp;&nbsp;How often do you manage to get out on your bike?I get out as frequently as I can and want; really since it's also my job. I used to commute with my bike in Nairobi a lot more before but I see myself getting more inclined towards trail and cross country riding instead. It's more peaceful this way.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you go cycling by yourself or in a group?I cycle alone when I need to unwind and discover places. I usually prefer not to listen to music while riding because I like concentrating on the voices within my surroundings.&nbsp;&nbsp;How do you see the impact of Covid-19 as you pass through the countryside?There are many remote places where tourism as well as local businesses have been severely affected. A shopkeeper in Kamukunji, Solai area, told me how since the pandemic begun, his sales at the shop have dropped as people now struggle to prioritize their expenditures. Many hotels and attraction sites I visit also speak of a decline in visitor numbers this year. However, the more interior I go, the more I realize that the curfews, physical distancing and mask-wearing protocols don't seem to apply.&nbsp;‍

30 days around the countryside with Baisikeli Adventures

Weddings are always a great way to celebrate two people who love each other becoming one. I got to chat with a friend,Grace Mwangi who is engaged about her upcoming wedding. She gladly takes us through the whole planning process, the highs the lows, the joys and disappointments. Tell us about the wedding planning process?The planning process is going on well, I am very excited. However, there is a lot on the bride side since she does most of the planning while the groom helps in terms of approval.Personally as the bride I have taken the lead of the planning process i.e. I have to know how our parents will be dressed on that day, How the bride’s maids and groom’s men will be dressed, the décor, the cake, I mean I have to be at the centre of everything. Also for the entire process we need to keep a close eye on everything given its just one day in a lifetime and so you want it to be perfect. How were you able to select the date especially with the current pandemic?Interestingly, we had already decided on the date when we started dating. We knew that by 2020 we would behaving our wedding. Personally, I already knew the year I want to get married and luckily my partner was thinking of the same year and so we decided on 2020.But now we had to settle on a specific date so when this year came, we first selected the last Saturday of November. However, I have two sisters who are expecting in late October and we wanted them to be part of the wedding and so we decided to push it back to early October hence settling for 10th October. <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f5a612d9f3050ae1e48fe0c_3.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>As for the pandemic, while we were selecting the dates, there was no Covid-19, it caught up with us after settling on the date. And despite Covid-19 we decided not to change the dates whether it was just me, my groom, our parents, and the pastor during the ceremony given the new rules on public gatherings. How did you choose the guest list given the strict government rules on public gatherings?Honestly this has been the most challenging part because we have big families and a lot of friends so initially we were planning on inviting about 400 guests because we wanted our families and friends to celebrate with us. Then Covid-19 happened and that was a big blow to us cause now we had to narrow down the numbers and it was not even half our guest list. So when the government set the restriction to 15 people, it was to be the couple, our parents, the best couple, and maybe one or two relatives. But when they increased the number to 100 we were able to adjust the list and with that we had to give a priority to relatives as for our friend groups like from work we settled on selecting representatives. &nbsp;Have the suppliers changed their rates and services due to Covid-19?Most of our service providers are our friends. I can give an example with our videographer. Before Covid-19 his initial charges ranged from around 80k-100k but now he had to reduce to 70k. As for us we chose the 70k package given our budget but since he is a friend he gave us a discount. So I would say for some them it has gone down for others not really. As for the other service providers i.e. catering and cake they have given me friendly rates. We decided to go for our friends who are experts in those various fields so as to promote them and also get favorable packages. <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f5a6178509ed94a8da58478_4.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>What inspired you to choose the venue?Cost friendly, my background as well as the location. The venue we chose we got it at a good price.Secondly, we are doing a church wedding and we found a church that has a good reception area. My background is Anglican we opted for an Anglican church.Actually it was a special request from my mom and we decided to honor it. Also,the reception area is such a beautiful place too. &nbsp;What you would have done different if it weren’t for the pandemic?If it weren’t for the pandemic we would have wanted to celebrate with so many of our family and friends. Another thing is the curfew,we would have loved to host our guests till late into the evening but given the curfew we need to release our guests early so as not to inconvenience them.Those are the main things we would have loved to do differently.For our ruracio we had to do it with only 15 people yet that’s another celebration I would have loved to have celebrate with a lot of people. Actually I have realized that I like inviting people to celebrate with me when I am celebrating something but now because of the restrictions we had to do it with a small group. <figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f5a61ca965384d2e6c531c9_2.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>Also there are those traditionally steps that we have to follow i.e. the guy has to come and know the lady’s home and the lady goes on the other side and so we ended up skipping some because they involved a lot of travelling and with Covid-19 it was not possible. While some we ended up compiling it into one visit. Have you experienced any other challenges during this planning process so far?Yeah. Resource mobilization.Unfortunately, some of our friends have lost their jobs while some are on half pay due to the current situation, the pandemic. So it’s a bit challenging because one is not getting the support they would have wanted to get though it’s a situation that you understand. Another thing, we would have wanted to have physical meetings with friends and families to keep them updated with the wedding plans but now we have to rely on WhatsApp or rather the online meetings. Which is very effective currently, but there are also those people who are not so much into social media and so they feel left out. Actually many a times you call a relative to update them and they feel offended cause you are not involving them in the wedding plans but in real sense some of them are not really not tech savvy. And sometimes people might not end up picking or joining the online meetings. &nbsp;And the positives? I think the positives have been: Great support from both families. They have been supportive every step of the way. Also our close close friends and our planning committee have been very supportive. Also, the budget. The budge would have been so tight with our initial number of guest lists but since we are working with around 150 guests there has been a reduction in the budget which is a good thing.Another thing, for the physical meetings one has to hire a venue, transport and catering services and that would have incurred some costs so right now the costs people are incurring are just bundles for the online meetings. Your take away?<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center"><div><img src="https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f168dd02f926aa17ef8751f/5f5a622a152d444270880033_5.jpg" loading="lazy"></div></figure>I have come to realize that a wedding is a good thing and planning for it is quite interesting whether there is a pandemic or not, eventually it still happens. And I have come to appreciate that the wedding is actually you, the groom, the best couple, the parents, rings and someone to officiate it, if those are there it would still happen. I have also learnt that when you plan for it with your partner you get to know them more, how they react to pressure, how they react when frustrated, it’s just a good thing to learn the other person during such processes. And be more innovative during a crisis. Also people can actually livestream the ceremony via social media. Who knew people would be doing online weddings? I just post a link and you watch it from wherever they are. &nbsp;‍

Young, in college, your idea of a date is a mzinga and a pass by Sonford for the signature kuku chips as you hope the babe will be super impressed to the point she will finally agree to go watch that movie that has been lying on your laptop for weeks. Yes, you have watched it before, but hey, one has to make sure it is a good one first, right? After college, truth hits you hard. Dating is expensive in Nairobi, no matter what stage you are in. One has to be creative to keep chivalry alive. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1616033837/DSC_08688_6cad8154fe.jpg"> It was February, a month people love and loathe in equal measure. I admit to not being the romantic - flowers and chocolates kind of dude, but with this babe, I had to try. “You look deep in thought” she breaks the silence. “Mmmh” I murmur. I'm just blankly staring at a family of monkeys. The notice at the entrance says ‘do not feed them', while the true warning should be just like the ones plastered everywhere mankind congregate, ‘Take care of your belongings'. After all, we share most of our DNA formation with them, always wanting to pinch on what is not ours. “You are an amazing cook,” she continues, wiping crumbs from the creases of her mouth having folded the balance of the feta samosas I had packed for our creative outing. I smile with pride, offering to wipe away the non-existent crumbs she didn’t have left on her face. My to go to channel for quick and easy ideas for indoor and outdoor hosting is HONEY. I could spend a good chunk of my day just taking notes on how to elevate my hosting game. Just the other day I was shuffling through the channels when one caught my eye. A dude was on it, I knew of him from the social streets, and he was competing to have his recipe on the menu of a certain restaurant, ‘Making the Menu' they called it. And here, some homemade step by step plagiarised recipe had made me a cook. Nice. Back to the monkeys. They have scattered away now – I hope they leave us in peace. My mind wanders again. I marvel at the picnic set up – I am really getting good at this shot at creativity.I bought a couple of accessories from Vintage Picnics and threw in a bit of my own pieces from the house. I could literally audition as an event organizer for this new show Patricia Kihoro is hosting on DStv. The one where more seasoned organizers put together dreamy set up worthy of popping. The big question. I stare into my picnic babe’s eyes and see satisfaction and hunger all at once. She wants another picnic soon. She says this without saying it. Time flies when you are having a good time. The sun is setting and we decide to take a walk home. We get home and slump on the sofa, habitually, I turn the telly on for some background noise and I am met by the most pressurizing image on TV for the moment. A guy is down on one knee. I had left the TV on my default channel 173 and Yes!Ndio!Beeni! was in the moment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries around the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Restore our Earth”, and the focus is on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystem.The Earth Day celebrations take place for a week, and below are some of the activities that one can engage in. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;When babies begin babbling, “Ma” is often the first sound they vocalize.&nbsp;This may well be the reason why in many languages, the word for “Mother” begins with either the letter M, or an iteration of “Ma” sound.&nbsp;As the world unites in celebrating Mother’s Day on 9th May, we can confidently share our top three predictions:1. Single stem white roses and elegant floral bouquets will be dished out in abundance (yay to the floriculture industry and florists who will sweat it out behind the scenes as Mamas around the world embrace the beautiful aroma from nature given in love, and received with abundant joy)2. &nbsp;There will be heightened activity on the virtual world and Google will carry the day as the search for ‘Mother’s Day card’ peaks throughout the weekend.&nbsp;Beautiful screenshots will be shared multiple times, as humanity congregates around a single mission – to extend “Happy Mother’s Day” wishes to mothers on our contact list and online communities.3. &nbsp;There are people for whom the day will evoke painful emotions. Torn between reliving the heartache of losing a mother and celebrating the rich legacy of a mum in heaven, this year’s Mother’s Day will inadvertently become a painful day to trudge through.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1620379969/Heaven_f88e70d646.png" alt=""></figure>Given that we are on a mission to rewrite the script and make Mother’s Day a significant and beautiful celebration, we have gone on overdrive to empower our readers, and hopefully cancel out our first two predictions above. Our third prediction is a very delicate topic.&nbsp;It is not made easy by the fact that the commercialization of Mother’s Day has overwhelmingly tilted the scales in favour of mothers on earth.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;What many may not know is that Mother’s Day, first celebrated on 12th May 1907, was founded by Anna Jarvis, an American social activist and community organizer.&nbsp;Reeling from the pain of losing her own mother, and deeply touched by departed’s legacy, she organized a memorial service in her mother’s honour, and rallied the support of her nation’s leadership to have Mother’s Day adopted as an annual celebration, every second Sunday in the month of May.&nbsp;Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, and is the third most popular holiday globally, after Christmas and Easter.We sought out Mueni Wambua to gain a deeper perspective on Mother’s Day for Mums in heaven. Mueni wears many hats: she is an authenticity coach, a grief recovery counsellor, and a minister under the Nairobi Baptist Church.&nbsp;Our conversation with her brought out insightful perspectives on Mother’s Day, and we are delighted to let you in on part of our conversation with Mueni.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1620374871/Mothers_0720206b62.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Mueni Wambua</figcaption></figure>What is your most memorable Mother’s Day, and what is it that made the day stand out for you?&nbsp;14th May 2006 was the most memorable one as it was the first one that I celebrated as a mum having had my son exactly a month earlier. I had been diagnosed with endometriosis in 2002 and I had been told that there is a great possibility that I may never be able to have a child. So, to hold my son was a miracle and a statement of the faithfulness of God.Becoming a mum also gave me a new perspective of my own mum and I saw her in new light.&nbsp;I have profound respect for mums and what motherhood means. I can only summarise the intensity of the emotion with the quote that the day you become a mother is the day you start watching your heart walk outside of your body.&nbsp;A lot of focus on Mother’s Day tends to be on mothers who are alive and present.&nbsp;Is it healthy to celebrate mothers who have passed on?&nbsp;Mother’s Day is held in honor of all mothers – here on earth, and in heaven. We can celebrate our mothers and the memories we carry since we are because they were.This day can be full of heartache because life only gives us one biological mother and the death of a mother is a watershed event in the life of many, there will always be a life before and a life after her demise.And if to celebrate her on this day gives you comfort and has significance, by all means, go ahead and remember her in the best way you know how.How can we celebrate mothers who have left us?Grief is a very personal journey in which we grieve not over titles but over relationships.Some of the ways we can celebrate mums that have left us is to live out the lessons we carry from their lives and express love to those around us in that way. For instance, if your mum was all about family unity, you can have time together as a family to remember her.It is also important to acknowledge that sometimes relationships with mothers could have been strained or even broken when they were alive. In this case, while it may be easy to feel like there is nothing to celebrate about her, you can give yourself the gift of forgiving her and yes, still picking the lessons you can from her life even if it means learning what not to do or who not to become.Bottomline, it is important to find a way to allow yourself to remember your mother in a manner that reflects the kind the relationship you had or even the one you wish you had with her. Do this in truth and love and kindness to yourself.Our blog actively promotes outdoor living and encourages people to take excursions and enjoy quality time together.&nbsp;This is because we believe that outdoor living offers a 360- degree perspective on wholesome wellbeing (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual).&nbsp;Is it possible to heal the pain of loss by taking part in solo or group-based outdoor activities?&nbsp;Grief and loss and the emotions we experience demand expression and to deny these will have adverse effects on us. It is therefore imperative to find healthy ways to cope with our losses.The outdoors are a liberating, healthy and generally affordable way to connect with ourselves and our loved ones. Picnics, exercising together, going for walks, hikes and even engaging in gardening are all ways that can nurture us and allow us to calm our minds when everything seems overwhelming. We can also find ways to support our loved ones in their time of loss in a manner that does not endanger them or ourselves and yet it still communicates our love and presence. A good number of us have special relationships with our mothers from childhood through the different stages in life. Our mothers tend to hold a special place in our hearts given the things they do for us, the lessons they teach us, and the memories that we share them.At The Picnic Site, we are all about celebrating our mums this Mother’s Day. We reached out to our friends, Grace Akinyi, a sustainability writer/researcher and Hassan Umar, Tv and radio presenter at KTN home and Radio Maisha to share with us their relationships with their mothers and how they would treat them on this special day.&nbsp;How would you describe your relationship with your mother?<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1620476495/Grace_and_Mum_1_236c1e0592.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Grace Akinyi and her mum</figcaption></figure>G.A: There is no true love like that of a mother. A mother is someone who knows your pain and can feel it. She also knows what you are going through and can easily detect it. I’d describe my relationship with my mom as “extremely close” we are more like sisters. She is my support system and is always there for me. It is one kind of love that I will live to cherish for the rest of my life.&nbsp;What are some of the traditions that you and your mother have?G.A: I thank God that my mom is a very prayerful lady. I would describe her as a prayer warrior. And it has always been our tradition to pray before sleeping, and going to church together too. She usually says we have to thank God for everything. Praying is therefore a habit that I have learnt through my mom and it is part of me; it is part of us.&nbsp;What are some of the lessons you have learnt from your mother growing up?G.A: Humility- My mom has taught me the value of being humble. Knowing that everyone in life is going through something and we have no option but be humble and treat someone well regardless of the situation.Staying true to who I am- my mom always tells me to make everyone feel like they matter. This led to the very close relationship that we have.&nbsp;What are some of the traditions that you and your mom have?&nbsp;H.U: Aside from the singing, dancing and cooking, by the way I am a very good cook thanks to her, my mom and I love watching sunsets. Even if we are not in the same city, we will be sure to remind each other to watch sunsets during the week. Also, not a tradition but I picked my fashion sense from her. Mother's Delight- The Most Beautiful Woman In The World

If you have visited the Nairobi National Park over the past eight months, you may have come across a group of young Kenyans on a mission to keep the park litter-free.&nbsp;Every day, from 6.00 am to 5.00 pm, they are hard at work, distributing litter bags and sensitizing visitors on the need to keep the park clear of trash.&nbsp; As Kenya grapples with uncontained littering in estates, roads, city centers, and recreational spaces, Vivienne Kemboi and her team are on a mission to ensure that all visitors adhere to a strict “No littering” policy within the park.Through the “Waste-Free Park Initiative,” Vivienne’s team has taken a leading role in engaging more than 50,000 visitors.&nbsp; Their hard work is bearing fruit: the park is evidently cleaner, visitors are more sensitive to the impact of their litter on wildlife and the environment in general – and they are taking the conservation message beyond the confines of the park.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1622316453/3_fc3cd53069.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Vivviene And the 3s Team At The KWS</figcaption></figure>As we gear up to commemorate World Environment Day in a few days, we are shining the spotlight on Planet Heroes – men and women who are going the extra mile to make the world greener and cleaner, safer and habitable:Who is Vivienne Kemboi?I am a trained Monitoring &amp; Evaluation Expert and a passionate Digital Content Creator.&nbsp; I am also the Founder &amp; Executive Director, 3Es Experience OrganizationTell us briefly about your work in environment conservation<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1622316578/2_25e69d0d46.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Vivviene At Work</figcaption></figure>I have always been passionate about conservation from a very early age.&nbsp; As a student at the Maasai Mara University, I visited the&nbsp;Maasai Mara Game Reserve regularly. Whenever I visited, I noticed that the road traversing the small shopping centers en route to the Mara Main Gate was heavily littered with polythene bags and plastic bottles.&nbsp;One time I organized an environment cleanup exercise with the help of the Chief Warden of the Maasai Mara National Park.&nbsp; The success of that one event opened a new avenue for me, as I partnered with the local community and ran a monthly clean-up exercise.In 2019 I founded 3Es Experience to improve the livelihoods of communities while at the same time empowering underprivileged students in school and promoting environmental conservation.The organization’s mandate revolves around three key pillars: Energy, Environment, and Empowerment.&nbsp; These strategic pillars can be summed up in our organization's slogan “Clean energy. Sustainable Environments. Empowered populations.”Tell us briefly about the ongoing partnership with Nairobi National Park&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1622316672/4_f921f17565.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Vivviene Poses With One Of The KWS officers</figcaption></figure>Since October 2020, we have been running an initiative at the Nairobi National Park known as the “Waste-Free Park Initiative”, which is aimed at environmental conservation and wildlife protection of the park`s ecosystem by discouraging littering and encouraging environmental friendly ways of waste disposal. This is so that non-biodegradable waste does not end up inside the park, causing harm to the ecosystem and endangering the lives of animals with threats of extinction.Visitors coming into the Nairobi National Park are issued with environmental-friendly litter bags in a bid to mop up plastics at the world-famous animal sanctuary. Visitors to the park use the biodegradable bags issued to collect their litter - mainly water, food, and snacks packaging used while inside the park- and disposed of it in litter bins and recycle stations at the entrance, or with some carrying them home to dispose of responsibly. Through this, non-biodegradable plastic waste that is a threat to the park ecosystem is discarded from the park.&nbsp;How are you able to carry out such a large-scale project?Through strategic partnerships.&nbsp; We are in partnership with Apex Steel Ltd, National Environmental Complaints Committee, Enviro Wild Initiative, YouTube Channel: Where is Vivienne? and Kenya Wildlife Service. They are in support of the Waste-Free Park Initiative. Charcuterie boards are undeniably elevating the picnic game. They have been all the rage in restaurants and social media platforms for some time now. Picnic lovers are easily picking up this concept to elevate their picnic setup and to entertain their guests.“Charcuterie” is a French word that means “cooked meat”. A traditional charcuterie board is usually piled up with different kinds of prepared meat.However, the ultimate charcuterie consists of cured meats, cheeses, and finger foods on a platter or board, a balanced combination of flavours from sweet, to savoury and spicy or sour. Giving everyone a wide range of choices to choose from.From the grocery shelves, restaurants to social media, the charcuterie board is becoming an everyday experimental, aesthetic meal that everyone is jumping on board for. And even though the Instagram trends might be recent, the charcuterie boards have been trending on and off since the early 1900s.&nbsp;The boards have become a creative way in which people can express themselves through meals and social media influencers from all over the world are not shy to try it out. With just a quick search on the #cheeseboard, it's easy to find different accounts that are part of the trend and one can easily pick up ideas on how to set up one from various social media platforms.Recently, American model Chrissy Teigen posted a video on her Instagram page on how to make your board under the cravings board challenge. The concept of the video was to inspire her followers to join the charcuterie board train by asking them to create their boards and share them too on their social media platforms.Here back home in Kenya our very own Tatiana Karanja, &nbsp;better known as Mama Olive partnered with Alerquin wines Kenya to share their charcuterie board offers for picnic setups. Apart from selling wine best suited for picnics,the south Australian winery also offers picnic packages that include a charcuterie board accompanied by their wines.With the current craze that's going on about the meal plan, one can't help but be tempted to join the trend. Personally,once I get the perfect board, I’m so getting on board and I think you should too. Did you know that World Picnic Day is celebrated every year on 18th June?&nbsp; On this day, people are encouraged to go outdoors and enjoy a hearty meal in nature, in the company of their family, friends, and acquaintances.&nbsp; Picnics have been in vogue for many centuries, across different cultures, and it’s easy to understand why they are such a hit:&nbsp; the outdoors connect us to nature, allowing us to enjoy some sunshine and beautiful scenery.&nbsp;As we prepare to celebrate this year’s World Picnic Day, we share some interesting facts on this much-loved holiday:<ol><li>In the medieval era, picnics were an extravagant outdoor affair, organized for groups of royal hunters.&nbsp; They eventually shifted to simple meals that anyone could pack in a bag and enjoy in the sunshine.</li><li>The word ‘picnic’ stems from the French word ‘pique-nique’</li><li>America’s Independence Day (celebrated on 4th July) and France’s Bastille Day (celebrated on 14th July) are popular days for outdoor dining, and many celebrations take place in a picnic set up.&nbsp; In Italy, Easter Monday is the country’s favorite picnic day, while in the UK, National Picnic Week is celebrated from 19th – 27th June.</li><li>Picnicking became common in France after the French Revolution, when it became possible for ordinary people to visit and mingle in the country's royal parks.&nbsp;</li><li>The first table designed specifically for picnics (in a style similar to what we know today) appeared in the late 1800s.</li><li>In the year 2000, a 600-mile-long picnic took place in France to celebrate the first Bastille Day of the new millennium.</li><li>A fashionable group of Londoners started a Picnic Society in the early 19th century. Their members were expected to share entertainment and refreshments.</li><li>One of the first accounts of picnicking comes from tales of Robin Hood. Ten Interesting Facts On Picnics

&nbsp;Last month we celebrated Mother’s Day with a lot of pomp and fanfare.&nbsp; It was my first major assignment as Editor of <a href="https://thepicnicsite.co.ke/">The Picnic Site</a>. We had so much fun putting together content in honor of Mother’s Day, and the icing on the cake was the delightful brunch picnic that we hosted for six families, in partnership with Vintage Picnics.&nbsp;On 20 June we will be celebrating Father’s Day.&nbsp;I am not one to generalize, but the muted anticipation of this great day has got me wondering…could it be that our collective focus is skewed towards the upcoming WRC Safari Rally?&nbsp; Or could it be that we tend to downplay this day that is set aside to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood? &nbsp;In seeking some Father’s Day inspiration, Google recommended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXiQtD5gcHU">Papa was a rolling stone</a>, a song released by The Temptations in 1972. The tune is astounding, the beats authentic, the lyrics downright funny in a sad kind of way.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623775074/The_Temptations_eee07ba2a8.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>The Temptation</figcaption></figure>My story.“My Papa was no rolling stone”, I muttered as I took in this beautiful soulful ‘seventies tune.&nbsp; Let me tell you about my Papa. He loved his Embassy Mild and his Tusker Lager.&nbsp; He loved football and more so, his boys, as he called them – the young players of Tusker FC.&nbsp; You see, apart from his regular job at Kenya Breweries Limited, Papa served as Team Manager for Tusker FC for many years.&nbsp; Between his boys, his brood, his wife, and extended family, it is really hard to tell who Papa loved more.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623775154/Papa_3aac559e0d.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Papa introduces his boys to SK Matiba, then Chairman of Kenya Breweries Limited</figcaption></figure>What I do know is that Papa made time, and in his own way loved everyone beautifully.&nbsp; Papa would take us to the Nairobi Show, get us all those fancy toys in the bazaar, pay for our endless rides on the train at the Kenya Railways stand, allow my elder siblings to sneak into the daytime disco at the showground while letting us go overboard with endless bottles of Fanta and Tarino at the KBL stand.&nbsp;Papa loved books – and passed on that love to us.&nbsp;From Hardy Boys to Nancy Drew, right down to Beano, Dandy, and Tintin, Papa transported us into a whole new world of imagination, laughter, and awe.&nbsp; He had a pet name for my younger brother – Chet Morton.&nbsp; Chet was a sneaky character in Hardy Boys. He also had a pet name for one of my sisters – he called her Nyar Baba. I guess in modern lingo that loosely translates to Daddy’s Little Girl.&nbsp; (Tyler Perry’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baZo44opr1Y">Daddy’s Little Girls&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;also happens to a great movie that tackles fatherhood, love, commitment, and betrayal.&nbsp;If you are looking to get into a Father’s Day mood, it may be worth your while.)Papa loved country music.&nbsp; Kenny Rogers was one of his favorite singers, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIcIY7ymFZY&amp;t=23s">The Coward of the County</a> was one of his most-loved tunes.&nbsp; Interestingly, the lyrics of this song may well be the tune to get you in the right mood for Father’s Day.&nbsp; It tells the story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, in a world where Brawn tends to overshadow Brain.&nbsp; Another favorite tune of Papa’s was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hx4gdlfamo">The Gambler</a>.&nbsp; This was probably one of the many songs in my songbook – painstakingly transcribed so that we could enjoy singing along with Papa as we made those painfully long trips upcountry.&nbsp; For sure, Papa was no rolling stone.&nbsp; But he did love this other song&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5JgdxaS3sU">Lucille</a> – an uncanny tune about a Mama who must have been a rolling stone.&nbsp;Sadly, Papa passed away after a long fight with cancer, not long after I had jumped into my ‘teens.&nbsp; It has been more than thirty years since that painful departure.
