Picnics are releasing a breath of fresh air on Nairobi’s social scene, and Nairobi has not been left behind:&nbsp; from Paris to Brisbane, Shanghai to London, picnics have taken off on an unprecedented scale, fitting the bill as the perfect and safe way of reconnecting with nature and loved ones. When we got locked down due to the Covid 19 containment measures , we had to find a way to continue this tradition (my family is big). It started with placing an old carpet outside with a few cushions, to getting hay and pallets for those who felt too old to sit on the ground.&nbsp;What are some of the memorable experiences you have created as a brand?The most memorable experiences have also been the most challenging. My very first set up was for a young lady turning 21 who didn’t want any questions from me, she just said “Do your thing”.&nbsp; I loved the challenge and she absolutely loved it! Another memorable experience was for a 5 year old who wanted everything Spiderman. Creating the spider web inside the space was quite challenging. I was proud of what we did.&nbsp;&nbsp;How has the Covid 19 affected your kind of business?Interestingly, my business sprung from the social restrictions created by the Covid 19 pandemic.&nbsp; Our picnic experiences take into consideration many factors, the most common one being the limitation of numbers at any function, and the identification of safe and suitable outdoor locations for large scale events.Tell us more about the Soulful Saturday?Soulful Saturday is all about the music, reconnecting with your childhood! The DJ is well known in the area, having played in several clubs along Kiambu road. The event allows the guests to carry their own picnic baskets, favorite drink and enjoy the outdoors as we play soul music. BLOOMBERG BUSINESS WEEK, 11.05.2021 | &nbsp; Hinckley Yachts, a storied shipwright that was founded in 1928 and has been building out of Southwest Harbor, Maine, since 1933, has a rule: construct no boat until it’s been purchased. A client buys a boat and then works with Hinckley specialists to craft it. The results are spectacular yachts and motorboats made with carbon fiber, epoxy, beautiful woods, and up-to-the-moment technology.&nbsp;But in 1994, <a href="https://www.hinckleyyachts.com/">Hinckley</a> broke its no-building-before-buying rule for the very first <a href="https://www.hinckleyyachts.com/models/picnic-boats/">Picnic Boat</a>. The company was struggling financially when co-owners Bob Hinckley and Shep McKenney came up with the idea for a dayboat: It would look like the lobster boats that trolled Maine’s rocky coves, be made of the then-newfangled Kevlar composite, and use an innovative inboard jet system to allow the hull to navigate shallow water.Perfectly suited for sunset cruising with cocktails, the first Picnic Boat was launched in May of that year, with no interest and no buyers. But late that summer, as McKenney told me for my book, Hinckley Yachts: “a guy comes down the dock and asks for a ride. We’re out for a bit, and when he gets off the boat he extends his arm to shake my hand and says, ‘I’ll take two.’ ”<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1621281343/Hinckley_c397cbefcc.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Photo Courtesy: Bloomberg</figcaption></figure>Today, the Picnic Boat is a cornerstone of the company’s business and one of its best-known products—Hinckley even trademarked the name. Now in its 25th year of production and with more than 1,200 built, the boat is available in 34-, 37-, and 40-foot variants with price tags of $1 million to $1.7 million. A “Signature” edition created in honor of the anniversary features comforts such as air conditioning and diesel generators as standard.Hinckley, with its elegant design and use of varnished woods, “speaks to an era of boating that feels like it’s been passed by in favor of bland white hulls and misshapen powerboats,” says Peter Ostrega, global managing director for legal consultant Consilio, who bought a Picnic 34 in 2018. “When combined with the technology they put in every boat, it was the only boat we ever considered—and the only yacht builder we would work with in the future.”The Picnic Boat has been in such high demand, there’s a backlog of orders almost two years long, according to Scott Bryant, Hinckley’s vice president for sales. It returns the boat in the spring, fully serviced.You’ll know Hinckley’s most popular models by their unmistakable sweeping sheer (the shape of the hull), curved transom, and lavish use of varnished teak and polished stainless steel. The inboard jet system is still standard: In it, a diesel engine is combined with an intake in the bottom and a propulsion mechanism in back that pushes and turns the boat. This setup not only allows for easy handling but also gives Picnic Boats access to shallower waters and better fuel efficiency at high speeds. Naivasha, Kenya, May 28, 2021: World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier, navigated by Julien Ingrassia driving a Toyota Yaris WRC is among 58 world’s top drivers_34 of them Kenyans_ in the 2021 Safari Rally, June 24-27, according to the entry list released today by the International Motorsport Federation (FIA) in the lake town of Naivasha, 91km west of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.All the three factory teams in Rally1 cars_Toyota, Ford, and Hyundai_ will field all their top drivers who have complimented the entry of 11 of the second-tier Rally2 machines leading pilots. Interestingly Kalle Rovanpera of Finland in a Toyota Yaris Rally1 is the youngest aged 20 while Sobieslow Zasada, 2nd in 1972 Safari Rally, and last here in 1997 is the oldest aged 91.The Pole will drive Ford Fiesta ST Rally3. Besides Ogier, Toyota’s other drivers are 2021 WRC Portugal champ Elfyn Evans, Rovanpera, and Takamoto Katsuta.The 2019 world champion Ott Tanak, Dani Sordo, Thierry Neuville and Pierre -Louis Loubet wraps up the Hyundai Mobius WRC Team assault. The 2002 WRC Safari winners M-Sport will field Gus Greensmith, Adrien Fourmaux and Lorenzo Bartelli in the Fiestas R1.Ford has also entered entered Teemu Suninen and Martin Prokok in the R2 class. National champions Baldev Chager and Ravi Soni (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO10) Eric Bengi/Peter Mutuma (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 10) and McRae Kimathi/Shameer Yusuf (Subaru Impreza N12) are the top leaders in the R3 class.WRC Wales Rally GB Clerk-of-Course, seconded by the FIA to assist Kenyan organisers said he was impressed by the entry list. “This is a competitive list. At first, I was pessimistic but now I am overwhelmed to see this in the first overseas WRC event since March 2020. It is a challenge. What kind of person takes a perfectly good passenger car, adds some spotlights, throws on a set of knobbly tyres, slaps a numbered sticker onto the doors and sets off on a race in the African wilderness? One who swims against the current, right?Yet this wasn’t such a crazy notion for the madcap drivers who started what was to become the Safari Rally.Not all bar talk is empty talk&nbsp;The story of the Safari Rally goes back to the early 1950s. Sir Eric Cecil (better known as Bwana Safari) was catching a pint with his cousin Neil Vincent in a Limuru pub. As the beers went down and the spirits rose, the conversation veered to men, speed and machines, and the legendary 4,800 km Nairobi – Johannesburg Road Race of 1936.&nbsp; This was a rally unlike any other at the time, but the memory of its thrills and spills created the perfect backdrop for conceptualizing a Kenyan Safari.On 27th May 1953, 57 intrepid adventurers set off on a mad dash through the Kenyan landscape in a motor rally to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It is worth noting that they were sober and willing participants…at least at the start.&nbsp; For five days these men and women battled dust, rain and mud. Only 15 drivers succeeded in coaxing their battered automobiles to the finish line on 1st June, 1953.&nbsp;As the curtains closed on the Coronation Rally, Bwana Safari’s concept for “the toughest rally in the world” had won hands-down.&nbsp;&nbsp;The glory yearsOut of the success of the Coronation Rally of 1953, the Kenya Safari evolved into an annual event, taking place over the Easter weekend, typically during the rainy April month when dirt roads would be churned into a thick quagmire that would (and did) swallow cars for breakfast, lunch and dinner!<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623439754/2_422ecdc837.png" alt=""><figcaption>Photo Courtesy of safarirally.co.ke</figcaption></figure>The Kenya Safari attracted drivers from all over the world, and also became a preferred ground for manufacturers to test their cars. It eventually caught the eye of world governing body for motorsport - the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) – and earning a place in its international motorsports calendar.In 1960 the event name was changed to the East African Safari Rally, and competitors would battle it out across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. In its early years, the event was dominated by local drivers due to their familiarity with the terrain.&nbsp; In 1972, Hannu Mikkola upset this trend and made history by being the first European to win the event in a Ford Escort.The collapse of the East African Community affected the East African Safari Rally, which would re-emerge as the Kenya Safari Rally after Uganda pulled out in 1973, and Tanzania a year later. &nbsp; The Kenya Safari Rally retained all glamour, attracting factory teams such as Ford, Lancia, Nissan, Porsche, Mercedes and Peugeot, as well as a wider field of foreign drivers.&nbsp;The ‘70s and ‘80s saw the Safari Rally hit its peak. Big names like Shekhar Mehta, Joginder Singh and Bjorn Waldegaard were on everyone’s lips. Even grandmothers would mention “Saka Meta” as they prayed for him to emerge victorious. Fans from all walks of life would line the roads, the majority carrying the Safari Rally scorecard that they would religiously fill after listening to the latest updates on who was leading on the road, leading on points, had been rendered time barred&nbsp;or had retired. It was truly a golden era for the Safari Rally!The return of the WRC Safari RallyThe Safari Rally became a World Rally Championship (WRC) event in 1973, a status it maintained until 2002. The success of the rally was invariably due to the quality of corporate sponsors it was able to attract; Malboro retained title sponsorship from 1980 to 1990. After their departure different corporates would step in to sponsor the rally. With time the quality of sponsorships faded, and in 2003 the Safari Rally was deleted from the WRC calendar.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623440009/rally_3_6a9a1191a9.png" alt=""></figure>The intervening years have seen the event run as a round of the African Rally Championship, organized by the FIA. To give credit where it is due, the Kenya Commercial Bank took on the title sponsorship from 2005, returning some stability to the event and giving the organizers the space to adapt it from its traditional marathon style rally to the WRC format of shorter competitive stages held on closed roads.&nbsp;A renewed commitment from the Government of Kenya, the Kenya Motorsports Federation, and other stakeholders resulted in a concerted lobbying campaign for a return of the Safari to the WRC calendar. The FIA had been monitoring the event and when they were satisfied that the Safari had been brought up to par with international regulations, approval was given for the Safari Rally to return to the WRC calendar in 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic that saw all public events canceled, it was pushed forward by one year to June 2021.Why is the 2021 Safari different?The return of the WRC Safari Rally is the cherry on the pie for the long years of dedication the organizers have put into hosting the event. It will be interesting to see whether with all the changes, the Safari Rally will still live up to its slogan of “the toughest rally in the world”.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623439939/all_girl_team_07a0ad410d.png" alt=""></figure>The only aspect of the Safari Rally that remains unchanged is the ceremonial flag-off at the Kenyatta International Conference Center.&nbsp;This will be followed by a Super Special Stage on a purpose-built track at Kasarani, where for the first time, the cars will race side by side, giving spectators the opportunity to see how the cars and drivers match up “mundu khu mundu”.After the Super Special Stage, the cars will make their way to Nakuru County, where the rest of the rally will take place around Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementaita.&nbsp;Much as the return of the WRC Safari Rally heralds a different character&nbsp;to the event, it also presents the organizers a golden opportunity to showcase the entire country if each successive event is hosted by a different county. Handled well, it would inject a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to participants and fans alike. &nbsp;

The Animated Bar Chitchat That Birthed The Safari Rally

“To finish the rally, you've got to finish all the stages.” This was Kenyan rally veteran Patrick Njiru’s advice to a group of young rally drivers when he met them earlier this month. Njiru, who flew the Subaru World Rally Team flag for 20 years was also the first Kenyan to finish the Safari Rally in a Group N vehicle back in 1990. This year, the celebrated speedster makes his return to the course as one of the sport’s biggest spectators as he gears up to witness the next generation of Kenyan rally drivers make their global debut at the FIA’s World Rally Championship Safari Rally which will take place between 24th – 27th June, 2021.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623618813/1_911efb9703.png" alt=""></figure>The race will kick off in Nairobi and traverse some of Kenya’s most scenic landscapes along the Great Rift Valley. While the race promises to be a grueling contest for the competing local and international drivers and their navigators, it offers a flurry of treats and thrills for outdoor adventure seekers. Wednesday 23rd June – Touchdown#TeamVashas can get an early start on the fun by taking a midweek trip to Naivasha for the pre-rally shakedown. This is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the elite drivers and super cars as they conduct tests and trials on the main course as well as securing whatever accommodation will be remaining in the busy town. President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to flag off the race so security protocols will definitely be tight. But the snaps from atop the country’s most iconic landmark are well worth the hassle.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623619014/5_660fc44775.png" alt=""></figure>3.Friday 25th June - KedongThe 33 km Kedong stage is the rally’s longest stage and will set the pace for the rest of the race. Many drivers are expected to struggle with the volcanic ash that dots most of the terrain and with cars zooming at average speeds of up to 75 Kph, there are bound to be a few wipe outs. Carry your sunhats and bring a pair of sunglasses because this will be a dusty one.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623619059/4_04fd13b804.png" alt=""></figure>4.Saturday 26th June – Sleeping Warrior&nbsp;With picture perfect views of Lake Elementaita’s flamingo swarms against the majestic Sleeping Warrior hill, this stage is every outdoor lover’s dream destination. As the racers wind their way through the sprawling Soysambu conservancy, there will be plenty of spots to lay a picnic and make memories with your crew. There couldn’t have been a better location to celebrate the tenacity of the drivers who will manage to outlast the grueling terrain while showcasing Kenya’s majestic beauty to the rest of the world. Auto enthusiast will be in for a rare treat here as the world of rallying congregates in Naivasha. Travel enthusiasts will also be spoilt for choice by Naivasha’s wide variety of Kenya Wildlife Service manned facilities.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1623619314/8_f1200973c2.png" alt=""></figure>As with all outdoor activities, safety is paramount in this event and spectators are expected to adhere to stipulated protocols while cheering on the racers and having fun. Here Are The Best Spots To Catch The 2021 WRC Safari Rally Action

Nairobi 15 June 2020: At last, some good news that should get us riding into town.&nbsp; Baiskeli Center, the first of its kind parking facility has been unveiled, opening up a new avenue for cyclists to access safe parking for their bicycles as they run their errands in the City Center.Located along Kipande Road, next to Paramount Plaza and in close proximity to the Globe Roundabout, the center offers two packages – a full day parking with access to a locker and shower facility, at a daily rate of KShs 150.00.&nbsp; There is also the option of parking only, at the daily rate of KShs 100.00.Baiskeli Center will operate every Monday to Saturday, from 7.00am to 6.30pm.&nbsp; As part of its introductory offer, the first 20 clients each day for the next two weeks will access the parking services for free.You can reach Baiskeli Center on 0746726202.&nbsp;

It is like comparing chalk and cheese. WRC cars are bespoke cars built for one specific purpose…to win the race. Materials like carbon fiber are used to construct body panels, highly advanced engineering using space-age materials, and metals are used to manufacture the engines and transmission systems which are then tuned to within an inch of their tolerances. Beefed-up suspension components are added to the mix, resulting in a car that is highly specialized and whose specifications are adapted to specific rally events.The visitors are coming, get ready!<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1624126110/ford_fiesta_wrc_5cc53438bc.jpg" alt=""></figure>WRC events tend to draw a lot of attention and visitors to the host country. After a 19-year absence, drivers, mechanics, support crew, sponsors, media personnel, and fans will throng Kenya. It is estimated that the four-day event will draw in at least 1,250 guests, directly associated with the FIA WRC, competition entrants (car manufacturers, technical teams, and racing crews).&nbsp; With the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, the number of unique visitors coming to take in the rally may be reduced significantly.&nbsp; If indications are anything to go by, these numbers, complemented by the local motor-sport diehards will breathe new life to the battered hospitality industry and stimulate the Naivasha economy, where the bulk of the action will take place.A green legacy&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1624126240/WRC_Legacy_Project_7a252ece05.jpg" alt=""></figure>The WRC’s Greening Legacy Project was launched during World Environment Day and plans to plant 19 million trees over the next three years, to mark the 19 years the WRC Safari Rally has been absent from the Kenyan scene. The exercise has so far seen over 600,000 seedlings planted, out of the targeted 1 million trees before the Safari is flagged off on June 24th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WRC Safari Rally: Our Eyes Are On These Crews

With the much-anticipated rally only a few short days away, the party scene is slowly getting sporty, giving enthusiasts the best of both worlds. This weekend, the party kicks off with Park &amp; Chill’s WRC Safari Rally Kenya Edition.&nbsp; The party, which will take place at the Carnivore Grounds will kick off at 10am.&nbsp; Subaru and Mitsubishi drivers will have the entry costs waived, while other revelers will be required to pay an entry fee of KShs 1,000 per person.&nbsp; Those we get to the venue early, between 10am and 12 noon, will also get complimentary passes.The lineup features DJ Pierra, DJ Kuuch, DJ Meal-Tone, DJ Coco, DJ Sos-Jay the Hypeman Ballo.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1624168352/Screenshot_2021_06_19_at_21_10_22_b4ba4e6bec.png" alt=""></figure>For those making their way to Naivasha where the heavy action will be taking place, Sunset Village, has organized something special for spectators along the Moi South Lake Road.&nbsp; Between 25th and 27th June, spectators can access the Squad Day Pass, which consists of 5 tickets for a price of KShs 5,000.00.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dn4vattmg/image/upload/v1624168420/B_Etika_do_a4c600a611.jpg" alt=""></figure>With the rally taking place in the middle of a pandemic, we urge all spectators and party people to take due care and observe the prescribed MOH protocols.
