Dear Mama, From Me To You With Love
By Kwame Akinyi
A good number of us have special relationships with our mothers from childhood through the different stages in life. Our mothers tend to hold a special place in our hearts given the things they do for us, the lessons they teach us, and the memories that we share them.
At The Picnic Site, we are all about celebrating our mums this Mother’s Day. We reached out to our friends, Grace Akinyi, a sustainability writer/researcher and Hassan Umar, Tv and radio presenter at KTN home and Radio Maisha to share with us their relationships with their mothers and how they would treat them on this special day.
How would you describe your relationship with your mother?
G.A: There is no true love like that of a mother. A mother is someone who knows your pain and can feel it. She also knows what you are going through and can easily detect it. I’d describe my relationship with my mom as “extremely close” we are more like sisters. She is my support system and is always there for me. It is one kind of love that I will live to cherish for the rest of my life.
What are some of the traditions that you and your mother have?
G.A: I thank God that my mom is a very prayerful lady. I would describe her as a prayer warrior. And it has always been our tradition to pray before sleeping, and going to church together too. She usually says we have to thank God for everything. Praying is therefore a habit that I have learnt through my mom and it is part of me; it is part of us.
What are some of the lessons you have learnt from your mother growing up?
G.A: Humility- My mom has taught me the value of being humble. Knowing that everyone in life is going through something and we have no option but be humble and treat someone well regardless of the situation.
Staying true to who I am- my mom always tells me to make everyone feel like they matter. Be confident and know that in this life, I am my own super-power and that I can achieve anything.
What message would you like to send to your mother this Mother’s Day?
G.A: I would love to tell my mom that I really appreciate everything she has done for me this far and just to tell her that her prayers have kept me going and I wouldn’t hesitate to treat her this Mother’s Day like the queen she is and will always be. I love you so much mom.
At the picnic site, we are all about outdoor living. If you had a chance, what kind of activity would you organize for your mother on mother’s day? Why?
G.A: I would organize a picnic for her or take her for a boat ride at paradise lost so that we can just enjoy the day together and celebrate her.

Tv and Radio presenter Hassan Umar
“I genuinely feel like every day should be Mother’s Day. Our mothers are precious, they go through a lot to provide
us with nothing but the best and they always support us and so one day is just not enough to celebrate them,” Hassan Umar.
How would you describe your relationship with your mom?
H.U: I wouldn’t define it as a relationship rather a commitment and an unbreakable bond. My mom and I are very close. There is an 8-year gap between my sibling and I and during this period, my mom and I got to spend a lot of time together doing so many activities such as a singing, cooking and dancing. This led to the very close relationship that we have.
What are some of the traditions that you and your mom have?
H.U: Aside from the singing, dancing and cooking, by the way I am a very good cook thanks to her, my mom and I love watching sunsets. Even if we are not in the same city, we will be sure to remind each other to watch sunsets during the week. Also, not a tradition but I picked my fashion sense from her. My mom loves dressing and has a great fashion sense and I was able to pick that up and emulate it.
What are some of the lessons that you have learnt from your mom growing up?
H.U: She has taught me that in life, I need to always treat everyone equally, be humble and above all put God first in everything.
What message would you like to send your mom this mother’s day?
H.U: I would like to tell her that she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She has helped me make some of the best decisions in life and for that I am very grateful to her.
At the picnic site, we are all about outdoor living. If you had a chance, what kind of activity would you organize for your mother on mother’s day? Why?
H.U: I would organize a hike for her. She is always saying how she would like to cut down some weight and I think hiking would be the best outdoor activity for her to do it.
